GALLSTONE ILEUS IN A MIDDLE-AGED OBESE FEMALE: A CASE REPORT

Abstract Gallstone ileus is a rare complication of cholelithiasis. It accounts for 1-4% of mechanical intestinal obstructions and is most commonly seen in elderly women. Its nonspecific clinical presentation often leads to delayed diagnosis and treatment, increasing the risk of morbidity. Case report We present the case of a 55-year-old obese woman who presented to the emergency department with a first episode of abdominal pain and vomiting that began 48 hours earlier. The patient underwent emergency exploratory laparotomy with enterotomy and stone removal. Conclusions The purpose of this article is to inform and emphasize the importance of maintaining vigilance for possible cholelithiasis in patients with intestinal obstruction, regardless of age or previous history of biliary tract disease. Timely surgical treatment can lead to a more favorable outcome for the patient.
